Difference between NordVPN PKG and Apple Store on Mac

The current difference has been observed as of May 2023, regarding the NordVPN app, between PKG available directly on the web site and Apple Store (for Mac and MacBook).

PKG version vs Apple Store versions

Version from the App Store

This version of the NordVPN application can be installed directly from the Apple App Store on macOS devices with firmware no older than 10.15.

It features the Kill-Switch, which cuts internet access if the VPN connection suddenly disconnects. This prevents your connection from any vulnerabilities if it drops without terminating app processes.

Regarding Kill Switch differences, the option for Kill Switch that is implemented on the App Store version is for the whole internet access.

IKEv2 protocol is also (and only) available on the applications that are directly downloaded from the App Store (on both iOS and macOS devices).

Version from the NordVPN site (PKG file)

This version of the app can be side-loaded from our website, and it can run on earlier versions of macOS (the newest version is available only on macOS 10.15+).

When activated, the Kill-Switch terminates separate apps instead of your entire internet connection.

This version allows you to access specific additional preferences, such as custom DNS servers.

You can also use Threat Protection to block trackers and malicious ads and avoid malware.

Conclusion

It is possible choose whichever KillSwitch is better for you and your needs – whether you want the separate applications to have internet terminated when the VPN is cut off, or whether you would like the whole device to lose internet access when VPN gets cut off.
